Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death, the Ford family was managed by her mom, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she already had made her television debut in an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
